The operation commenced in 2006 following a request  from the Government of Timor-Leste to the Australian Government for the creation  of a multi-national security force to assist with stability operations within East Timor. The force, called the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in East Timor, has evolved over time and currently consists of approximately 470 personnel from the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces. The current rotation of troops is led by an Australian Army Officer, Colonel Mick Reilly, with Royal New Zealand Navy Officer Commander Anthony Millar serving as the Deputy Commander.

Mid Caption:5th Aviation Regiment Detachment, Townsville, have been providing flood relief assistance to Theodore and Emerald  through the evacuation of 56 people, air dropping of medical supplies, evacuation of patients from the Emerald hospital and the dropping of 42 tonnes of food and general supplies to isolated areas. As the situation in Emerald has improved, the aircraft have now relocated to Rockhampton in anticipation of further flood relief operations. Additionally, a RAAF C-130 Hercules has been providing relief to the people of central Queensland by delivering temporary accommodation and groceries to flood victims over the past few days. Deep Caption: Operation Queensland Flood Assistance is the ADF's contribution to the whole-of-government flood rescue and relief efforts, which was initiated in response to the devastating Christmas floods experienced by central Queensland.

Local children of the village of Zumalai in remote East Timor express their excitement at the arrival of an Australian Army  Black Hawk helicopter, carrying valuable medical supplies as part of Timor Leste Aviation Group support to Exercise Pacific Partnership 2011 - a combined Humanitarian Assistance mission led by the US Navy - on its visit to East Timor.Mid Caption: In mid August 2011 almost 70 soldiers of the Australian Defence Force's Timor Leste Aviation Group (TLAG) will return home. The troops arrived in East Timor in early February 2011 to take up their respective roles with TLAG which operates Australian Army Blackhawk helicopters. TLAG forms part of the Australian-led International Stabilisation Force (ISF) that is assisting East Timorese security forces to maintain a stable and secure environment at the invitation of the Government of Timor-Leste. The ISF currently comprises around 460 personnel, 380 of which are from the Australian Defence Force, and up to 70 personnel from the New Zealand Defence Force. The Maritime Role 2 Enhanced Team from HMAS Choules extract a mock patient from an Army A25 Blackhawk whilst conducting aero medical evacuation practice  during  Exercise SQUADEX 2012. Mid Caption:Exercise SQUADEX, conducted in waters off Townsville and Cowley Beach in North Queensland, is the first of a series of two exercises in which Australia's newest ship, HMAS Choules, conducts amphibious and flying operations with elements of the Australian Army. HMAS Choules delivers a significant amphibious capacity which can be used in warlike and humanitarian operations. The focus of the exercises is to work closely with Army in the lead up to the introduction of  Canberra Class Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Ships. HMAS Choules can accommodate two large helicopters, 150 light trucks and up to 350 troops. The ship is commanded by Commander John Cowan, CSC, RAN.
